For event the most fit and health conscious person, personal setbacks and life’s challenges can sometimes get in the way of maintaining what you deem to be your personal best shape.
As someone in the health and fitness space, I was confronted with the harsh reality of this truth over the last six months. I went from being in the best shape of my life to my worst, in three short months. If you have read this post, you will understand the setbacks that lead me down the diet path of destruction.
For the purpose of this post, the reasons are not as valid as what I did to firstly gain 6kgs in three months and secondly, how I plan to lose it- and fast.
Because of my personal drama, I wasn’t working for two months and then when I did start working, it was a desk job that involved 10 hour work days, spent at my desk, only training my fingers on the computer keyboard.
So besides going from a very active job to a sedentary job, I found myself un-stimulated, drinking too much coffee and craving sugar during the day and uninspired to train after work. Stressed from a hectic work day, I reached for wine to soothe and calm the anxiety.
And that’s how simple it is to put on weight- and- the crazy thing is, what I have described above is how the majority of our population spends the bulk of their time!
-No wonder you’re struggling to get into shape!
How do I plan to get back into shape?
Cut the booze to no more than two to three drinks, once a week
I am all about living life to the fullest and having a little fun, but if its not in moderation, you will be rocking a stubborn muffin top in no time (as I discovered.) Whether you’re drinking wine, whiskey or gin, it’s all pretty calorie heavy. You’re looking at between 120 and 160 calories per drink. A bottle of red wine can easily contain 500 calories and so you can see how easily you can consume your daily allocated calories on booze!
If you’re serious about losing weight and maintaining it, you’re going to have to choose one day to drink and commit to not overdoing it.
Cut the coffee to no more than two cups for the day
If you’re drinking black coffee then you can get away with more. But the minute you add milk or drink a flat white/ cappuccino or latte, you’re looking at 120 calories per cup.
It sucks I know! I use My Fitness Pal to log my food diary and what I enjoy about it is the reminder of just how many calories are in the things that do not nourish us, like coffee and booze. I used My Fitness Pal to help me get into shape for Jiu-Jitsu comp I was training for in January, but stopped after I got myself into a good eating habit. I am using it at the moment to keep track of what goes in and what goes out training wise.
Move my body and get a coach
Easier said than done, I know! I was there, stuck in a rut, not wanting to do anything. If you are in a restrictive desk job and want to make getting into shape a priority, then you need to keep track of your calories even more than someone who isn’t training. You also have to find time to move your body. Whether it’s taking the stairs at work, using your lunch hour to train at a nearby gym or even using only your body weight fora daily quick HIIT session at home.
You need to move and again, tracking your calories burnt on an app, will help you understand where you are and what you need to do in order to reach your goals.
